What is Xarelto Used For?

Xarelto is a new-generation anti-blood-clotting agent known as direct factor Xa inhibitors. The drug is currently indicated to alleviate the following conditions:

  • risk of stroke
  • deep vein thrombosis (DVT) – a blood clot in the legs or body
  • pulmonary embolism (PE) – a blood clot in the lungs
  • blood clots in patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery
  • prevention of blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation (abnormal heartbeat).

Xarelto was positioned by Bayer and Johnson & Johnson to be an improvement over the long-standing blood thinner called Coumadin (warfarin). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Xarelto originally in 2011.

Not long after FDA approval, reports of complications and adverse events linked to Xarelto began pouring in.

A 2014 report by the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices stated that the number of serious adverse events related to the use of Xarelto had reached 680—exceeding the number of claims linked to Pradaxa, a similar blood thinner in the same class, for the previous year.

Xarelto Side Effects

Devastating complications and side effects of Xarelto include

  • Uncontrolled internal bleeding
  • Cerebral bleeding
  • Gastrointestinal hemorrhaging
  • Stroke
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pulmonary embolism (PE)
  • Brain hemorrhage
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Death

Additionally, the use of blood thinners carries the possibility of internal hemorrhaging. In the case of warfarin, a low dose of vitamin K is used to effectively stop internal bleeding. Xarelto does not have an FDA approved antidote that can stop or reverse hemorrhaging.

Xarelto Lawsuits and Settlements

An increasing number of lawsuits claim that the two pharmaceutical companies failed to adequately warn patients about Xarelto’s connection with severe internal bleeding and related health risks. Victims who have filed Xarelto lawsuits also allege that Bayer and Johnson & Johnson deceived consumers by holding the drug out to be a superior alternative to warfarin, which they assert is false.

Approximately 100 Xarelto lawsuits have been filed against Bayer and Johnson & Johnson. These lawsuits are being consolidated in a products liability litigation multidistrict litigation (MDL).
